With the consultation of regional sports authorities, World Aquatics cancelled the Diving World Cup Stop scheduled for next weekend in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico.

The cancellation comes less than a week after drug cartel kingpin “El Mencho” (Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes) died in the state.

Following El Mencho’s death on February 22, which occurred during a capture mission by Mexican armed forces, Jalisco and several other Mexican states experienced a surge of violence. The violence is overwhelmingly believed to be orchestrated by El Mencho’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel as retaliation. To read more about the violence uptick in many parts of Mexico, read the Associated Press’ coverage of the events here.

For the world’s elite divers, the news comes as they compete at the first stop of the World Cup in Montreal. The ongoing event now serves as the lone qualification avenue for the 2026 World Cup Super Final in Beijing. The Super Final will still take place May 1-3.

In World Aquatics’ cancellation statement, the governing body said they made the decision after consultation with Mexico’s national diving federation as well as Jalisco’s State Council for Sports Promotion.

The day after El Mencho’s death, everything from schools to public transportation in Jalisco were closed. Even as day-to-day operations return to relative normalcy, sports and entertainment in the region have been affected. Originally scheduled for the day of El Mencho’s death in Jalisco, the Mexican national soccer team successfully played a postponed game against Iceland two days ago. Regional F.C. Atlas switched workouts to virtual amid the chaos in their state. Colombian-American popstar Kali Uchis cancelled her concert in Jalisco capital Guadalajara, while many foreign national athletes for the Guadajalara-based Charros professional softball team have asked to be released from the team. Large events in other parts of the country, such as Mexico City and Monterrey, remain unaffected.

Mexico is one of the world’s most prominent diving countries, earning the second most medals of any country in the sport at the 2025 World Championships. President Claudia Sheinbaum awarded Mexican diver Osmar Olvera the National Sports Prize after he snapped an 18-year Chinese win streak in the 3-meter springboard at last year’s Worlds. 2026 was supposed to be the second year in a row in which Mexico hosted a diving World Cup stop.
