Students at Broomfield High School may have been exposed in Colorado’s latest measles case ...Middle East

News by : (Colorado Sun) -

Students and teachers who were at Broomfield High School on three days late last week and early this week may have been exposed to measles in the most recent case to strike Colorado.

The case, involving a child between the ages of 5 and 17 who was not vaccinated against the disease, was announced Friday by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The child has not recently traveled outside the state or had contact with anyone known to be infected with measles. That suggests “that unidentified measles cases may be occurring in or traveling through the area,” CDPHE wrote in a news release.

The agency says anyone at Broomfield High School on Thursday, Feb. 19; Friday, Feb. 20; or Monday, Feb. 23, may have been exposed.

Other possible exposure locations include a King Soopers in Broomfield, a Petsmart in Westminster and a restaurant in Lafayette, as well as medical facilities in Broomfield and Louisville.

CDPHE provided a chart with the exposure locations and times and the dates through which symptoms may emerge.

If you develop measles symptoms — which start out like a common cold, with fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes — call your doctor or local health clinic and let them know before heading in to seek treatment.

This is the second case of measles in a Colorado resident in 2026. The first also involved an unvaccinated child between 5 and 17. But that child was out-of-state during their infectious period, meaning there was no risk of spread from their infection in Colorado.

Earlier this week, Colorado announced that an infected adult had traveled through DIA and attended a church service in Littleton, possibly exposing others along the way. Because that person is an out-of-state resident, their case is not reported in Colorado data.

CDPHE has a detailed list of all exposure locations and times on its website.

Colorado recorded 36 cases of measles in 2025, the highest total in decades as the disease resurged across the country after having long been considered eliminated. There have already been close to 1,000 measles cases reported nationwide in 2026. This puts the country well on its way to topping last year’s 2,281 reported cases across the country.

The biggest outbreak is in South Carolina, which has reported more than 600 infections this year. Florida, Utah, Arizona, California and North Carolina have also reported sizable outbreaks.
