ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe County has been recognized as a Storm Ready community by the National Weather Service. The certification was renewed this morning, highlighting the county’s preparedness for severe weather.
In November, Monroe County launched “Monroe Alert,” a new emergency alert system designed to warn residents about public safety threats, including severe weather.
“A warning for severe weather or flooding is of little value, no matter how accurate, if the people in the warned area don’t hear about it or respond properly to protect themselves,” said Michael Fries, Meteorologist-In-Change of the National Weather Service Buffalo Office.
To achieve the Storm Ready certification, a community must establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center. It must also have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings, create a system for closely monitoring weather conditions, host public readiness seminars, and develop a formal hazardous weather plan.
