Denver Broncos free agency: Tight end targets plentiful if George Paton is looking ...Middle East

Denver Broncos free agency kicks off in 10 days along with the rest of the NFL.

Denver’s a serious Super Bowl contender right now, coming up one win short of making Super Bowl LX.

And what they need to do is get their affairs in order on the offensive side of the ball. That includes at tight end. Will the Broncos go after a free agent tight end with Evan Engram’s contract still on the books?

Denver Broncos free agency: Tight end targets plentiful

At the NFL Combine this week, Sean Payton said there are two “musts” in terms of building the roster: running back and linebacker.

But Broncos Country knows those aren’t the only positions of need.

On offense, running back is the biggest hole to fill, while adding another receiver and possibly a tight end are important priorities too.

The thing is, Evan Engram is still on the roster and is a massive $14M cap hit this year. If they cut him before June 1, it would mean $10M in dead cap and a $3.8M savings toward the cap. Post June 1 would shift those numbers to $7.6M dead cap and $6.7 in cap savings.

So, who are some tight end targets the Broncos may go after if they want to either supplement or replace Engram?

Currently, Denver has $28.6M per Over the Cap to play with. So they can sign a handful of players, but they need to be smart with their money, too.

Cade Otton

On ESPN Aaron Schatz wrote one free agent signing for every team, and he picked Cade Otton to Denver.

“Tight end is a clear need for the Broncos, so why not sign a bigger name such as David Njoku? Because the Broncos already have a receiving-first tight end in Evan Engram, and they need a No. 1 tight end who is also a strong run blocker. That’s Otton. He’s also useful as a receiver when needed, with 1,172 receiving yards and five touchdowns over the past two seasons.”

Otton would be a decent pickup for the Broncos. While his touchdowns were down last year—with only one—it was his best all-around season. He finished with 572 yards, a 51.9% success rate, and caught a career-high 72.8% of passes thrown his way.

As Schatz explains here, he’s a great run blocker, too. But, the downside is his valuation is $9.9M per Over the Cap. Denver’s not going to pay $24M toward to tight ends, right?

Foster Moreau

Speaking of a blocking tight end who can also catch the ball, Foster Moreau is an option for the Broncos.

Last year was a down season for Moreau after a career year in 2024. In 2024, he caught 32 passes for 413 yards and 5 touchdowns. But, he injured his knee in the final game of the year and missed the first half of the 2025 season.

That led to career-lows with 7 receptions for 59 yards and no scores.

He’s a former Saints player, which Sean Payton loves, but their time didn’t cross over in New Orleans, so that wouldn’t necessarily be a factor in Denver signing him. His $1.34M valuation for 2026 certainly makes him more cap friendly than Otton.

David Njoku

Njoku is a hot name in the free agent tight end market partially because he’s become an extremely consistent touchdown scorer the last five years.

He’s scored four-plus touchdowns the last five straight seasons.

However, Njoku’s yardage dropped significantly in 2025 compared to 2024, from 505 yards to 293. That continued a downward trajectory following his career-best 2023 season that sent him to the Pro Bowl (882 yards, 6 TDs).

At a $5.1M valuation, he’s not wildly expensive as an option. But his blocking is much worse than even Engram’s. One would think the Broncos want a more well-rounded player.

Adam Trautman

Or, Denver and Payton could just go back to the well with Adam Trautman. He’s played for Payton in 5-of-6 professional seasons and knows the offense inside and out.

The downside for Trautman is he’s not much of a receiving threat. Though, he is a decent blocker.

Ultimately, Paton and Payton have to decide what they want out of the position and how they value what Engram did last year.

While it was a quiet season, Engram caught 50 passes for 461 yards and a touchdown. Those are better numbers than anyone else on this list, outside of Njoku’s touchdown production.

A red zone tight end would certainly help Denver’s offense. Can they work on Engram to get him to be that guy?

It’ll be interesting to see what Denver does at tight end as free agency gets underway in 10 days.
