CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — Two fire departments battled a car fire on Thursday night in Canandaigua, stopping it from spreading to a home on Onnalinda Drive off West Lake Road.
The Cheshire Fire Department said it arrived to find the car in flames, about four feet from a home. It took Cheshire and Bristol firefighters about half an hour to control the flames, using a hose. Crews checked the home to make sure no flames had spread and left the scene around 2:30 a.m. Members of the Veterans Affairs Fire Department also helped at the scene.
Cheshire Fire Chief Chris Brown said that, because the car was a hybrid, it was more difficult to battle the fire. On Facebook, he explained that hybrids have high-voltage electrical systems that remain energized even when the car is off, and the lithium-ion battery could reignite.
