HONEOYE FALLS, N.Y. — Christopher Noto, a standout wrestler from Honeoye Falls-Lima, is preparing to compete in the state championships this weekend. Noto, who has already claimed a state title, aims to secure his second consecutive 132-pound state championship.
“I think my confidence is way higher,” said Noto. “Like, I know I’m going in the state tournament. I’m winning it. I got like the mindset of a champion, nothing’s gonna stop me.”
Noto reflected on his previous state win, saying, “It meant a lot. It was kind of like a shock. Like it didn’t feel real in the moment. But I know all the hard work paid off.”
Noto’s varsity journey began in seventh grade when he won sectionals. “The first year of varsity, because it was just like, whoa, I’m a seventh grader, I won sectionals, I could do this,” he said.
Tyler Carman, head coach at Honeoye Falls-Lima, praised Noto’s dedication. “At the end of the day, it’s what he’s done as an individual and a leader, and all the extra hours he puts in is what it takes,” said Carman.
Carman also noted Noto’s influence on his teammates. “I mean, that elevates our room every day,” he said. “There’s a guy that’s one of the best in the state and one of the best in the country here, that they get to train alongside and spend time with and learn from. So yeah, absolutely, it elevates our room.”
Noto shared his approach to competition. “Nerves are temporary,” he said. “And just leave it all out there because once you get nervous, it’s kind of like stops you from wrestling your best and you just have to leave it all out there because it might be your last time on the mat.”
Looking ahead, Noto expressed his hopes for the future. “I want people to look on the wall, see my name and be like, oh, I want to be like him someday,” he said.
After graduating, Noto plans to attend Division I Lock Haven, where he will be coached by his brother Anthony, a four-time state champion at Honeoye Falls-Lima.
The state tournament at MVP Arena in Albany is scheduled to begin on Friday and continue through Saturday.
