ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Students at Henry Hudson School No. 28 had the opportunity to explore the wonders of the ocean on Thursday morning. They got to explore the Whalemobile, a 40-foot inflatable whale.
Whale researchers were at the event to share stories, videos, and photos from whale-watching trips, along with discussing the threats whales face in today’s oceans.
“We want our kids to get a real-life experience. So we were excited to be chosen by the Whalemobile to come to School 28 and let the kids experience it,” said School No. 28 Principal Susan Ladd. “The other students in grades 2 through 6 will get to go into the whale and they have a lesson inside the whale. And then they come out, and they have another lesson about the environment and their habitat.”
The Whalemobile’s visit is part of a tour through four Rochester schools this month, reaching nearly 3,000 students. It also stopped by Abraham Lincoln School No. 22, Henry Hudson School No. 28, Dr. Iris J. Banister School No. 33, Frank Fowler Dow School No. 52, and World of Inquiry School No. 58. The Rochester Education Foundation’s Smile Program helps to make the program possible.
