Mat Ishbia is trying to get inventive to entice star players to participate in the NBA All-Star Game’s dunk and 3-point contests when Phoenix hosts the events in 2027. And he is willing to pay for incentives to those star players out of his own pocket.
The Suns owner told The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday that he’d offer a $1 million prize, plus another $1 million charity donation, to the winners of the two marquee events that will take place at Mortgage Matchup Center on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2027.
“Let’s get the best guys in it. Let’s make it awesome,” Ishbia told McAfee, who helped him announce the plan. “Let’s do it.”

Whether the league will green-light Ishbia’s pitch remains to be seen.
The NBA and the players’ union told ESPN’s Brian Windhorst that Ishbia’s idea does not align with the league’s bonus structures already established for the All-Star events. Ishbia had not run the idea by the NBA yet, Windhorst reported.
“I have a say in how to make it great,” Ishbia said of his role in hosting the All-Star weekend. “You know, not the actual game (format) part of it … But I have a say of, how do we get great players in it? How do we make it a great event? How do we make fan experience phenomenal?
“We’re going to make it an amazing event.”
