Lizzo was back in one of her favorite places on Thursday (Feb. 26) when she popped into Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about her residency at New York’s legendary Blue Note nightclub, sing an a cappella preview of her upcoming single and roll out a tray of her favorite rodeo delicacies.
After wrapping a run at the West Coast outlet earlier this week, the singer is about to launch a residency at Greenwich Village’s iconic 200-capacity Blue Note on Friday (Feb. 27) and she said the L.A. dates got her psyched to bring the intimate feels to Manhattan. “It was incredible,” she said about the up-close-and-personal vibe that had people munching on their meals at her feet as she performed.
“It’s like you walked into my living room and I’m just jammin’,” she added about the mood at the gigs that are considerably smaller than her typical arena concerts. “You have to make it your house or else it will freak you out. Because people are literally just sitting there and you’re like, ‘Do you hate me? Like, what are you thinking?'”
Right after the run ends, the Houston-bred star will pivot to the polar opposite, a sold out 70,000-capacity headlining gig at her hometown Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on March 6, marking her first-ever stadium gig. And while she never went to the event for, as Meyers put it, “rodeo stuff” like roping and riding, Lizzo said she has seen Beyoncé and John Mayer play the hugely popular event in years past.
In preparation for the big gig, Lizzo asked if she could sing an a cappella version of her upcoming single “Don’t Make Me Love You,” which she proceeded to soulfully croon from the couch to wild cheers from the studio audience. Meyers then tried his hand at the tune, warbling a few words before Lizzo interrupted to marvel at what she claimed was the late night host’s “perfect pitch.” The song, which Lizzo performed on Saturday Night Live last April, is from her upcoming Love in Real Life album, whose release date has not yet been announced.
The segment ended with the pair sharing some traditional rodeo food, including a plate of Louisiana gumbo and a corn do, with Lizzo displaying the correct way to eat the carnival favorite, which involves pulling off the top, eating a bit of hot dog and filling the corn-y “hat” with ketchup and mustard. The besties then attempted to create the world’s longest cheese pull by Lady and the Tramp-ing a cheese stick.
