ROCHESTER, N.Y. – I think everyone, including this meteorologist, is ready for a change in the weather. Some moderation of these harsh conditions would certainly be welcome.
In the short term, however, the overall weather pattern is not conducive to any significant warming. Plenty of winter chill remains, as the jet stream and upper-level wind pattern will continue to deliver occasional surges of Arctic air. While the cold will not be continuous, temperatures over the next 10 days are expected to run below normal more often than not for this time of year.
Looking farther ahead, longer-range weather models suggest that this pattern may begin to change in the 10- to 14-day timeframe. We anticipate a shift as the jet stream transitions from a cold Arctic flow to a milder pattern around March 7 or 8. While it is difficult to pinpoint exact timing and temperatures this far out, the change would certainly be welcome.
Additional optimism comes from the 8- to 14-day temperature outlook, which is increasingly supportive of milder conditions. Current data indicates a 40 to 50 percent probability of above-normal temperatures during that period.
And, of course, another encouraging sign is the official start of spring is just about three weeks away.
