A grass fire in Thornton on Wednesday forced the closure of Interstate 25, and a school, several businesses and nearby residents were being evacuated.
Thick black smoke could be seen rising from the fire, near 84th Avenue and Huron Street, according to a photograph posted on X by Thornton police at 12:05 p.m.I-25 is closed in both directions between Thornton Parkway and 84th Avenue due to low visibility. Wind gusts are near 40 mph in the area. Much of Colorado along the I-25 corridor is under a red-flag warning for high winds and fire danger until 6 p.m.
Pinnacle High School and nearby businesses were being evacuated, and multiple other roads have been closed, police said.
Officers were also going door to door in neighborhoods to the northeast of the fire. People who live in the area are being asked to go to Water World, which is at 88th Avenue and Pecos Street, as a safe location.
“While we do have emergency personnel conducting manual evacuations, anyone who does not feel safe should evacuate,” police said on the social media site.
No injuries have been reported.
