A suburban Chicago woman was charged Tuesday after the killing of a 28-year-old man, who was delivering food in Chicago when he was attacked in an apparent carjacking.
Montoya Perry, 33, faces charges for murder and vehicular hijacking in the killing of Daniel L. Figueroa, police announced Tuesday.
According to police, Perry “participated in taking a vehicle” from Figueroa around 12 a.m. Monday near Loretto Hospital on the city’s West Side, where he had been delivering food to a doctor.
The 28-year-old delivery driver was struck and killed by the vehicle as it fled. His body was later discovered on the street in the 5500 block of West Flournoy Street near South Lotus Avenue.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Loretto Hospital said it was aware of the “tragic incident” and that hospital officials are fully cooperating with local law enforcement.
“On behalf of Loretto Hospital, our prayers and condolences go out to the individual’s family and loved ones,” the spokesperson said. “Our focus remains on supporting the safety, health, and well-being of the community we serve during this difficult time.”
Figueroa, of Westmont, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later died, possibly from a head injury.
“He had a family that loved him, he was a good kid,” Daniel Figueroa’s father, Carlos Figueroa, said. “He was too young to die. A parent isn’t supposed to bury their children.”
Uber confirmed Figueroa was a driver with the company.
“We’re incredibly saddened by this tragic loss, and our thoughts are with their family and loved ones as they navigate this unimaginably difficult time,” the company said in a statement. “We’ve reached out to police and will assist them however we can.”
