WASHINGTON — Local congressional representatives and other lawmakers in New York State are reacting to President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address of his second term.
In the longest State of the Union speech in history, the president defended his policies on the economy, immigration, and foreign policy. He blamed Democrats for many of the nation’s issues and criticized the Supreme Court for its recent ruling that struck down his country-specific tariffs, calling it “an unfortunate ruling.” The speech comes months before the November midterm elections. In a statement, Rep. Joe Morelle of the 25th District said the State of the Union contained “dangerous lies” and said Trump’s policies fail to tackle rising costs or expand access to healthcare:
“Donald Trump used his State of the Union address to perpetuate dangerous lies, spew hateful rhetoric, and sow chaos and uncertainty into the lives of average Americans. It is clear the President is living in an alternate reality where he is not responsible for tackling rising costs, expanding access to healthcare, or addressing any of the other challenges people face.”
“Instead of caring for the long-term prosperity of working families, Donald Trump is engaging in reckless foreign policy, endangering the lives of American servicemembers, jeopardizing the security of our elections, and enriching himself and his billionaire friends. The American people deserve better than this. The President of the United States took an oath to serve the interests of all Americans, not just the rich and powerful. It’s time for Donald Trump to take that oath seriously.”
On the other side of the aisle, Rep. Claudia Tenney of the 24th District praised Trump’s policies on immigration, prescription drug prices, and more. She wrote her reaction on X:
“President Trump just laid out the clearest, strongest case for American renewal in a generation. From securing the border to cutting prescription drug costs, eliminating taxes on tips and overtime, and driving down fentanyl trafficking, the results speak for themselves. Tonight, the President honored American heroes past and present and reminded every family in this country what real leadership looks like.”
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer also shared his reaction, saying that Americans have never seen a State of the Union so “disconnected from reality.” His statement reads in part:
“The State of the Union address revealed Donald Trump is in a State of Delusion. Donald Trump painted a delusional portrait of America that hardly any working American would recognize. Americans have never seen a State of the Union so disconnected from reality. The president’s rhetoric and the country’s reality are worlds apart. Donald Trump failed to acknowledge in his speech the reality millions of people face every day with higher costs, unaffordable housing, more chaos, and more corruption. Instead he blamed the ills our country faces on everyone but himself.”
The New York State Conservative Party praised the speech, saying Trump laid out a “common-sense vision” for the nation’s future. The party said the midterm elections will decide the country’s path forward:
“President Trump laid out a bold, bright, common-sense vision for America’s future tonight. His optimism in our nation’s potential could be felt by anyone who watched the speech. This is a President who truly believes in everyday Americans, and who sees a clear path forward for them out of the mires of progressivism.”
“At the same time, President Trump laid out a clear and damning case against the unbridled progressivism that nearly brought this country to its knees under President Joe Biden. The two distinct paths for America could not be more stark.”
