PHELPS, N.Y. — Residents near the intersection of State Route 488 and Waddell Road in Phelps are frustrated with frequent car crashes through their yards. The latest incident occurred Friday afternoon when a car hit a guardrail, crashed through two backyards, a pool, and a porch, resting more than 100 feet away.
“He took out the guardrail there. The railing. Must have bounced into the bushes,” said Terri Donk, who’s lived at her house with her partner Dan Huntsman for 16 years.
Huntsman, who has lived in the area for 26 years, has seen plenty of crashes, but experienced his closest call yet. “I was sitting by that window right here in the corner,” he said. Huntsman described hearing a loud noise and seeing a flash pass by his window.
Next door, Alicia and Andrew Raeman have faced similar issues. “There was a motorcycle accident behind our house when we first moved in… We had a high-speed chase for our son’s birthday party,” Alicia Raeman said. In their five years of residence, they say they have had four vehicles crash onto their property.
Andrew Raeman expressed uncertainty about a solution. “There’s no good answer. You could put a stop light in, but that’s going to create disruption in the traffic,” he said.
“We’re open to anything to make our area safer. Not just for our family,” Alicia Raeman said.
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) extended the guardrail in front of the homes in the fall, but cars continue to bypass it. The DOT stated it is evaluating possible safety enhancements for this stretch of road. Complaints regarding state roads can be submitted online here.
