NFL Combine: Broncos’ Sean Payton says he’s ‘already’ pushed for an extension for GM George Paton ...Middle East

News by : (The Denver Post) -

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The way that Sean Payton speaks about Broncos general manager George Paton in public these days, one would think they’re filming their own buddy comedy series in Denver.

It’s a shout, perhaps, from when Payton and Paton were first paired upon Payton’s trade to Denver in 2023. Heading into their fourth year together with the Broncos, though, Paton is entering into the final year of an original six-year contract signed in 2021 — and Payton made it plenty clear at the NFL Combine on Tuesday that he wants the general manager around for longer.

When asked if he would advocate for Paton to be extended, Payton responded: “I have already.”

“So, yeah. It’s overdue,” Payton added. “I say that respectfully, to the process. But he and I have a great working relationship, so my job wouldn’t be as fun or exciting if he wasn’t a part of it. But that should be something that’s handled quickly.”

The question is just how quickly. Paton has emerged as a natural candidate for the general manager opening for the Minnesota Vikings, a franchise where he spent 14 seasons from 2007 to 2020 in various front-office roles. A variety of friends close to Paton, however, have told The Denver Post that the general manager is happy in Denver, particularly given the deep-pocketed Walton-Penner ownership group.

To that vein, Broncos owner Greg Penner — the ultimate decision-maker in this process — said at an end-of-season news conference he hopes both Payton and Paton are together in Denver “long-term.”

“If the two of them agree on something and recommend it, it’d be pretty unlikely that I ever overrule that,” Penner said, when asked about his ownership style. “So the approach – I think it’s working really well. And it starts with the two of them having a lot of trust in each other, and they each have a deep expertise and set of experiences.”

The Broncos have gone 44-41 in Paton’s five seasons as general manager, peaking in 2025 with a 14-3 record and a berth in the AFC Championship Game. They enter the 2026 offseason, too, free of the $85 million in dead cap weighing down the Broncos’ payroll after Denver cut ties with quarterback Russell Wilson, an ill-advised addition in hindsight that Paton has managed to maneuver the Broncos away from.

Paton, for his part, called Payton’s endorsement “really cool,” but largely shrugged off his contract status.

Cowboys set to hire Broncos pass-rush whisperer

Denver is losing a quietly important piece of its larger coaching staff, as pass-rush consultant BT Jordan has been hired by the Cowboys, a source confirmed to The Denver Post on Tuesday.

Jordan operates his own business called “Trench Performance,” and has only existed in the Broncos’ periphery as a consultant for the past two seasons. But he’s had a key hand in shaping a pass rush that finished tied for fifth all-time in team sacks (68) in 2025. In particular, interior defensive linemen Zach Allen and John Franklin-Myers have sworn by Jordan as a major contributor to their individual growth.

“He puts us in the most amazing — honestly, shoot, our success is based on him,” Franklin-Myers told The Post in December, on Jordan. “BT Jordan puts us in the right positions every time.”

Denver, however, is “close” to filling out the rest of their staff, as Payton told reporters Tuesday. The Broncos still need to name another secondary coach with the departure of Jim Leonhard to Buffalo, and Payton said they’ll have their full staff ready to announce by the end of the week.
