Will U.S. men's hockey team attend Trump's State of the Union? What we know so far ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

There’s been plenty of questions surrounding whether or not the gold medal-winning U.S. men’s hockey team would attend President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday and social media posts from several players are fueling speculation amid ongoing controversy surrounding the team.

The White House has been working through logistics so that members of the men’s team can attend the State of the Union, a White House official told NBC News.

House Speaker Mike Johnson had earlier said Trump called him Sunday night saying they needed to make changes to the guest list and that they were working to “squeeze” in members of the team.

Johnson said they’ve been working out logistics since.

“It’ll be a great moment,” he said.

The men’s team was already back in the U.S. Monday and several were posting on social media from what appeared to be a government plane, further fueling speculation that they would be heading to Trump’s address.

Matthew Tkachuk posted to his Instagram story an image of the team standing in front of a USAF Boeing CA-32, which is typically used for VIP transport and special operations.

Charlie McAvoy shared a photo to his page featuring Clayton Keller smiling and holding up his gold medal with an Air Force seal in the background.

Quinn Hughes’ Instagram story also featured a photo of Jack Hughes, who scored the winning overtime goal, on a plane, though it’s not clear if it is the same one.

Former Blackhawks star Chris Chelios also shared a screenshot of what appears to be a Facetime with players from a plane with the Air Force Seal in it.

The speculation comes after President Donald Trump, in a phone call congratulating the U.S. men’s team on their gold medal win at the Winter Olympics, invited them to his address Tuesday, with many enthusiastically saying yes in a video of the phone call.

During the message, Trump made a comment about the women’s team that has sparked outrage and criticism on social media — both at the president and the players who laughed.

In the call, Trump said that because he was inviting the men to his State of the Union address, he’d need to invite the gold medal-winning women’s team as well or he “would be impeached.”

The women’s Olympic team declined Trump’s invitation to attend, citing scheduling conflicts.

Scheduling will be a challenge as the NHL regular season resumes with five games on Wednesday and the PWHL resumes on Thursday.

Logistics played a role in the decision, as many of the women players were not scheduled to arrive in North America until Monday evening. The men’s team flew by charter to Miami earlier Monday. The women took a commercial flight and were scheduled to land in Atlanta.

A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that the women’s players didn’t learn of the invite until late Sunday night, making it difficult to change their travel plans. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the team’s travel plans.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Since then, American rapper and television personality Flavor Flav extended an offer of his own to the U.S. women’s hockey team to celebrate its gold medal win.

In a statement posted on social media Monday, Flav, real name William Jonathan Drayton Jr., invited the team to a “real celebration in Las Vegas.”

“We saw the story about the men’s invite to the White House, and the not quite invite for the women’s team,” part of the statement read. “…[Flav] always stands behind everything he says and does. If there is an interest for the team to come to Las Vegas and celebrate with Flav – we will figure it out on our end and make it a lovely experience.”
