PALO ALTO — New condominiums might come to the site of a long-shuttered Fry’s Electronics store in Palo Alto, marking the latest vision for redevelopment.
An affiliate of real estate firm The Sobrato Organization owns the property with addresses that include 3200 Park Blvd. and 340 Portage Ave., Santa Clara County real estate records show.
Fry’s Electronics store closed its doors there in 2020. It sits on a property that consists of four parcels and totals 14.5 acres, the Santa Clara County SCCMap page shows.
Sobrato is eyeing the development of 74 condominiums on at least part of the property, Palo Alto planning documents show. They would be constructed along Park Boulevard near its intersection with Olive Avenue.
The development group is seeking city approval of a subdivision of a section of the property to accommodate the proposed housing. The actual housing development site is expected to total roughly 3.9 acres and not require the entirety of the site, according to city planning documents.
It’s possible the housing development might require the demolition of at least a portion of the former Fry’s store building, which extends all the way to Park Boulevard.
The proposal is very preliminary, subject to revision, and lacks some key details.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether the condos would be attached, detached, for sale, or rental units. The timeline for construction wasn’t described.
At least one other Fry’s Electronics site in the South Bay has become suitable for redevelopment.
