Sentencing has been set for a man who pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted kidnapping of two young girls at different times at a Mission Valley mall.
The sentencing date is set for April 8. Ten years in state prison is the maximum sentence for Rene Arturo Lujan, 43, according to records in San Diego Superior Court.
He also pleaded guilty to three other charges, including possession of child pornography on his computer.
The girls, who were five and six years old at the time of the June 2024 incidents, were reportedly shaken up but uninjured. Lujan grabbed both girls in attempts two days apart.
On June 18, 2024, Lujan spotted a 6-year-old girl pushing a stroller with her younger sibling and their mother walking beside them. Lujan grabbed the 6-year-old and lifted her off the ground, but she screamed. Lujan then released her.
Two days later, Lujan attempted to take a 5-year-old girl to his parked car, but was stopped by an employee of Inflatable World, a playground-like facility filled with inflatables. Lujan quickly left in his car, but a license plate reader alerted officers when he passed one in downtown San Diego several days later on June 20, 2024.
He was arrested several hours after the second incident.
It is possible that Lujan may have to register as a sex offender after he is paroled, but this is up to a judge to order that. The charge of knowingly being in possession of minors involved in sexual activity could bring a lifetime of mandatory registration wherever Lujan lives.
Lujan’s attorney initially sought to have him declared mentally incompetent, but Judge David Berry found him mentally competent on Sept. 5, 2024.
Lujan remains in jail without bail.
