Spiner noted that Data had quite a bit of dialogue, especially during the show's first few seasons. He said that he would spend his nights trying to memorize his lines after he got home from set.

He said that the situation got better following the show's second season, which premiered in 1988. He explained that the show's producers realized that it would be beneficial for each episode to focus on one character. Spiner said this enabled the show's stars, which included Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, andLeVar Burton, to have easier work days when their characters weren't the focus.
"The other actors were laughing in my face at some of the characters I was doing," recalled the Star Trek actor.
"I thought the writing was good and so I was pretty much happy to do it. And also when I did make that rare phone call to say, 'I don't think this is quite what Data would say,' they would say to me, 'Just do your job,'" said Spiner on the panel.
