Air District should follow through on gas ban

Three East Bay representatives are proposing to allow deadly air pollution to continue and are exploiting low-income residents to make a cynical argument.

Alameda Supervisor David Haubert, Benecia Mayor Steve Young and El Cerrito Mayor Gabe Quinto proposed at a recent Bay Area Air District meeting to delay standards to reduce pollution from gas appliances. This pollution is responsible for scores of deaths and thousands of illnesses every year. Why? Because the district would allow low-income homeowners an exemption if they cannot afford to comply, and this would “look bad.”

Air pollution travels all over the Bay Area, yet this trio claims that low-income residents would be better off to continue to breathe deadly pollution than to substantially lower air pollution for all of us, especially low-income residents, who suffer the most from it. Come on representatives, do your job to provide us with healthy air and don’t just virtue signal.

Enough of Trump; let’s take the country back

We owe a debt gratitude to Donald Trump for showing us the dangers of electing a corrupt and morally bankrupt narcissist to the most powerful office in the world.

Only now can we take note of the degradation, come together to restore faith and respect in each other, and then rebuild friendships with our allies, respect for science and support for our institutions in general.

We can show respect for others, confidence in the values that have long guided our great experiment in democracy and demonstrate to all that we are the willing and able leader the world so desperately needs.

In short, I want my country back.

Huckabee statement is a path to more violence

The United States Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, made a very serious and unfortunate statement regarding the right of Israel to control the territories behind Palestine, which include areas in Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq.

This is a dangerous, extremist position and contrary to the treaties signed by Israel with Egypt, Jordan and the United States, as well as numerous resolutions of the United Nations. This statement will encourage the Israeli government to continue its total disregard for the rights of the Palestinian people, as well as threaten international peace and security.

Our State Department’s statement that the ambassador’s comments do not represent a change in U.S. policy aimed at resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in accordance with international law and norms is crucial.

It’s critical that we keep ICE from Bay Area

I wanted to address the importance of keeping ICE away from the Bay Area. Since the year started, there have been eight deaths caused by ICE agents. As politics get more tense, America seems to be separating. We should all be aware of how flawed ICE agents have been.

ICE agents don’t know their legal capacity, roam around and do whatever they want. They don’t need to identify themselves and can stop anyone without a valid reason. Their reason usually is “they look like an immigrant,” which shows discrimination and brings us back to a time when darker people were segregated. I want to advocate not just for Mexicans but for all minorities in this country because we are repeating a mistake that America has done over and over again.

I don’t want America to be great. I want America to be safe.

Military misadventures will explode U.S. debt

Donald Trump‘s pointless and outrageously expensive military adventures in Venezuela and now in the Middle East only add billions of dollars to our now untenably high national debt. It seems that they are only being pursued as a distraction from the Epstein debacle.

Will sanity ever be restored in our once rational nation? Where are all the conservative Republicans? They should know better and wake up.

Column doesn’t dare to suggest genocide

Re: “Netanyahu playing Trump, U.S. Jews for fools” (Page A9, Feb. 22).

Mr. Friedman, where have you been? Today you dared to use the “A” word (apartheid) when describing Israeli activity in the West Bank.

In 2006, President Carter published a book appropriately titled “Peace Not Apartheid.” You focus on the well publicized settler terrorism, but governmental “terrorism” has been rife in Israel’s control over both Gaza and the West Bank (or must I say Judea and Samaria) since they assumed total control over both territories in 1967. I could spend more than my allotted word limit outlining the types of laws utilized to encourage ethnic cleansing in both territories, but I would gladly provide you a reading list.

When, or will you, ever dare to use the “G” word (genocide) to describe the horrors being perpetrated by Israel in Gaza? Will we have to wait another two years?
