Cartel violence traps Rochester man in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester man is currently sheltering in place in Mexico following a surge of cartel violence over the weekend. Jason Ostrowski is in Puerto Vallarta, hoping to leave later this week after a security warning from the U.S. Consulate.

“I’m thinking, what do I do? I’m here alone,” said Jason Ostrowski.

Ostrowski is following government advice to lay low after clashes between the Mexican government and drug cartel members erupted in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.

Brett Davidsen, News10NBC: “Are you afraid for your safety right now?”

Jason Ostrowski: “Yes and no. I’m afraid in a sense of the unknown, what today is going to bring. Is tomorrow going to be back to some sense of normalcy?”

Ostrowski, a performer, brought his Elton John tribute show to Puerto Vallarta nine days ago. It’s a place he’s visited many times before.

Brett Davidsen: “When did you know something was wrong?”

Jason Ostrowski: “Yesterday — it’s always sunny here and when I opened my bedroom door, the sunlight floods in, and yesterday it was dark.”

The darkness was not from rain clouds, but smoke from burning buildings and cars. Ostrowski captured videos from the roof of his apartment.

“Throughout the day you could hear some stuff, as they set cars on fire, of course you hear those popping and stuff. I did hear some gunfire a couple times throughout the day,” Ostrowski said.

The violence began when the Mexican military killed a notorious cartel leader known as “El Mencho” while attempting to take him into custody Sunday. The retaliation led the U.S. government to issue a shelter-in-place alert for Americans. Ostrowski is scheduled to return home Wednesday, but is uncertain about his departure.

“I’m safe. I’m good. I have enough food and water for now. I think things will return to normal in the next couple days. I hope,” said Ostrowski.

While the Puerto Vallarta airport remains open, most flights have been canceled and ride-sharing services are suspended.
