ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Has watching Team USA during the Milan and Cortina Winter Olympics inspired you to take up hockey, figure skating, or speed skating? Many ponds across the Rochester area are frozen, but that doesn’t always mean they’re safe to skate on.
First Alert Meteorologist Nate Morris explains how to know if ice is safe. If ice is two inches thick or less, it’s not safe. If you want to skate or ice fish, the ice must be at least four inches thick. If you want to bring a snowmobile or ATV on the ice, it must be even thicker, 5 to 6 inches.
So, how do you know how thick ice is without actually stepping on it, drilling a hole, and measuring? First, if there are any visible holes, cracks, or running water, it’s not thick enough. You can also look at the color. If it’s clear and blue, that indicates high density and strength. In fact, there’s a rhyme for it. Thick and blue, tried and true. Thin and crispy, way too risky.
Check the actual thickness of the ice once you’re on it, and never go alone.
