Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Lyla Lusk from Austin, Texas, has verbally committed to swim and study at the University of Arizona beginning in the 2026-27 school year. She confirmed the news on SwimCloud, writing:

I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at The University of Arizona! Huge thank you to the entire Arizona coaching staff for this amazing opportunity and believing in me-you are truly the best! Thank you to my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for all of your support through this process and for helping me achieve my goals. I can’t wait join this incredible team of Wildcats and am thrilled for what’s next! Bear Down!!!

Lusk is a senior at Lake Travis High School but does not compete for the swim team, training year-round instead with Nitro Swimming, where she specializes in the 100s and 200s of backstroke and freestyle.

Over the past 12 months, Lusk has slashed more than two seconds off her 200 free, going from 1:53.71 to 1:51.63, while also dropping over half a second in the 100 free (52.78 to 52.11) and more than three tenths in the 100 back (55.71 to 55.37). Her 200 back best of 1:59.22 was set in January 2024, and with only six swims in the event since then, there could be some untapped potential as she hasn’t contested it at recent taper meets.

Lusk’s personal bests span a variety of meets throughout the year rather than being concentrated at a single taper meet. That ability to swim fast year-round is increasingly valuable as more college programs suit up and race fast at dual meets, not just conference championships and NCAAs.

She set her current best in the 100 free at the NT COPS 44th Annual Greater Southwest Classic a few weeks ago, her 200 free at Speedo Sectionals in Justin, Texas, last March, and her 100 back at the ST AAAA Senior Championships last February, when she won the event and took runner-up in both the 100 and 200 free with then-best times of 52.16 and 1:52.11.

Though she tends to stay local, Lusk is a two-time Winter Junior Nationals qualifier, having competed at the meet in both 2023 and 2024. Her highest finish came in 2023, when she touched 67th in the 200 back (2:03.02) and 75th in the 100 back (56.60), before returning in 2024 to contest only the 100 back (57.73), finishing 101st.

The Arizona women, in their second season under head coach Ben Loorz, finished second at the 2025 Big 12 Championships with 1,240 points, 455 points behind conference champions Arizona State. The Wildcat women went on to finish 29th at the NCAA Championships, where they accumulated 20 points.

Lusk is slated to make an immediate impact at the conference level. Based on last season’s results, her best time in the 200 back would have put her in the ‘C’ final, while she would’ve been just outside the 54.99 required in the 100 back. It took times of 50.48/1:49.72 to earn a second swim in the freestyles; given the 100 free directly conflicts with the 200 back, the 200 free on is likely to be her third individual event.

On the team’s 2024-25 depth chart, she would have ranked fourth in the 200 back, sixth in the 100 back, 10th in the 200 free, and 12th in the 100 free. She’ll be valuable in the backstroke events at dual meets and could work her way onto several of the team’s relays in the coming years.

Lusk joins a loaded Wildcats class of 2030 with several swimmers who overlap with her backstroke and freestyle strengths, making for strong training partners over the next four years. The class features Macey deGroot with 53.5/1:56.8 in back and 50.7/1:50.4 in free, Madison Ensing at 50.1/1:50.3 in free, and sprinter Pilar King at 50.1/54.0 in the 100 free/100 back. Distance specialists Lucy Flynn (1:49.65), Kingsley Rosevold (1:50.7), and Samantha Anderson (1:50.6) can also range down to 200 free speed.
