Chicago Bears Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson is at a Crossroads ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Tyrique Stevenson’s 2025 season was uneven to say the least. When injuries sidelined fellow cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon, the Bears needed Stevenson to stabilize one side of the secondary. Instead, Stevenson delivered mixed results.

There were moments when the 25-year-old cornerback flashed. Strong outings against the Dallas Cowboys and Las Vegas Raiders early in the season showed the physical press corner that Chicago’s front office envisioned when they used a second-round pick (56th overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft on the University of Miami product. Unfortunately, he could not find that consistency on a week-to-week basis throughout the season.

Tyrique Stevenson’s 2025 Snapshot

Tyrique Stevenson started all 30 of the games he appeared in as a pro in his first two season’s in the league. But by season’s end in 2025, the third-year cornerback’s role had diminished. Even though Stevenson still started 10 games, he lost defensive snaps down the stretch and finished the year appearing on just 71 percent of the team’s defensive plays. When the dust settled on the season, Stevenson finished with 49 total tackles, 10 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, one interception, and a tackle-for-loss in the 13 games he played.

The production wasn’t empty, but it didn’t outweigh the coverage volatility. He was targeted 57 times, allowing 33 receptions for 512 yards and a career-high 15.5 yards per catch. Pro Football Focus graded him at 64.4, ranking 52nd out of 114 qualifying corners, squarely in the middle of the pack.

Part of the challenge was context. While Nahshon Wright thrived amid the chaos as he led the league with 10 turnovers, Stevenson struggled to capitalize on his opportunity. The talent remains obvious. The reliability remains the question.

Stevenson is heading into the fourth and final year of his rookie contract. The four-year rookie-scale deal signed after the Bears used a second-round pick on him in the 2023 NFL Draft and came with a total value of $6,449,502 and included more than $3.48 million in fully guaranteed money. Stevenson is set to make $3.605 million in base salary and $422,637 in bonuses. If the Bears decide to move on from Stevenson, they could clear $3.605 million in cap space with just $422,637 in dead money.

Turning the Page

Tyrique Stevenson enters 2026 at a crossroads, and his immediate future could hinge on what the Bears do with Nahshon Wright in free agency. If Wright (who says he wants to stay with the Bears) commands a sizable deal elsewhere, Stevenson likely gets another opportunity to reclaim a full-time role. But even if Wright’s departure in free agency clears a path to playing time for Stevenson, he will still enter camp with pressure to perform.

At this point, Stevenson profiles as a traits-based corner who needs refinement. He possesses the necessary physicality, ball skills, and competitive edge to be a standout starting cornerback in the NFL. What the Bears need from him now (and moving forward) is discipline, technique, and fewer explosive plays allowed. Another year of growth could quickly reset the narrative.

If Tyrique Stevenson tightens the coverage and limits the big gains this season, then his 2025 campaign will likely be re-framed as a learning year. If not, the Bears may start looking elsewhere for long-term answers opposite Jaylon Johnson.
