Tottenham 1-4 Arsenal Stats: Gunners Seal North London Derby Glory as Eze Does It… Again ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

Eberechi Eze ended a long run without a goal and Viktor Gyökeres added another two more to his Arsenal goal tally as the Premier League leaders dismantled Tottenham Hotspur in their latest north London derby victory.

Just like last November, Eberechi Eze punished Tottenham in a devastating display to give Arsenal north London derby glory on Sunday.

The forward, courted by Spurs in the summer before eventually joining their biggest rivals, scored twice to help Arsenal collect a valuable three points in what is proving to be a tighter Premier League title race than anticipated a few months ago.

Viktor Gyökeres scored the other two goals in the dominant win, with the striker starting to prove his worth to Arsenal following his big money move from Sporting CP in July.

Those four goals helped the Gunners secure their fifth consecutive Premier League victory over Spurs, with this their best winning run against their rivals in league competition since January 1989.

In what was Igor Tudor’s first match in charge of Tottenham following his appointment as interim manager, it was much like the Thomas Frank era in many ways. Inability to defend well, coupled with lack of attacking intent, saw Arsenal run out deserved winners. Admittedly, Tudor has an exceptional list of absentees to deal with, but Spurs fans hoping for a new-manager bounce were left disappointed.

The opening goal of the derby arrived in the 32nd minute, as Arsenal deservedly took the lead through Eze.

After scoring a hat-trick in the north London derby at the Emirates Stadium on 23 November, the England international had gone 18 successive appearances without a goal in all competitions for the Gunners but struck against Spurs once again. Amazingly, his goal was also his first shot on target in league competition since that day.

After great work from Bukayo Saka on the right, a low cross was met with a heavy touch from Eze, but as the ball rolled up towards his chest, he sent an acrobatic finish from close range past Guglielmo Vicario.

The lead didn’t last long, however. Tottenham took just 122 seconds to level the scores, with Randal Kolo Muani netting his first Premier League goal in his 19th appearance in the competition.

An uncharacteristic error from Declan Rice saw the Arsenal midfielder lose possession to the Frenchman, before Kolo Muani powered into the box from the left side before firing with aplomb wide of David Raya’s dive.

With his goal, he became the eighth player to score his first ever Premier League goal in a north London derby. He was the first to do so since Martin Ødegaard in March 2021, and first for Tottenham since Danny Rose in April 2010.

That goal was Spurs’ only touch in the opposition box across the first half, with Arsenal having 29 of their own at the opposite end of the pitch.

It didn’t take long for Arsenal to make their attacking intent count after half-time, with Gyökeres continuing his great recent form with a superb finish from outside the box in the 47th minute.

The Swede picked up the ball on the edge of the box before curling a powerful strike beyond a diving Vicario to retake the lead.

Spurs, and Kolo Muani, thought that they’d found another equaliser soon after Gyökeres’ strike, but his goal was ruled out by referee Peter Bankes after a very soft push on Gabriel just before finding the back of the net.

But it was Eze who scored another just after the hour mark, rolling a shot into the goal after Vicario had smothered Saka’s shot to score against Spurs yet again.

It means that five of his seven Arsenal goals have now come against Tottenham, while he’s also scored more Premier League goals versus Spurs than against any other club (seven). He is the first Arsenal player to score five or more goals against an opponent in the same Premier League season since Emmanuel Adebayor versus Derby in 2007-08 (6) while he is only the second player to score four or more league goals in north London derbies in a season, along with Ted Drake in 1934-35 (five for Arsenal).

There have been loud questions about Eze’s suitability to Arsenal’s style in recent months after a long goal drought, but today proved once again that he has a role to play in the Gunners title charge.

Spurs nearly reduced the deficit in the 84th minute following Richarlison’s flick, but Raya sensationally prevented the ball from crossing the line with an outstretched arm when the ball looked like it was going into the goal.

That was the only (legitimate) chance Spurs had in the second half, however, with their attacking output thoroughly dissatisfying once again. They produced just six shots all game and could only manage seven touches in the opposition box – Arsenal managed 20 shots and 64 touches in the Spurs box, respectively.

Gyökeres added the gloss to Arsenal’s victory with an added-time goal to take him to eight goals in 14 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions in 2026, with no Premier League player scoring as many since the turn of the year.

Despite history suggesting otherwise, this was undoubtedly a potential banana skin for Mikel Arteta and his Arsenal team. This victory could eventually be seen as crucial in their potential title victory come the end of the season, regaining a five-point lead over City having played a game more than Pep Guardiola’s side. The fact of the matter remains that the Premier League title is still in their control, with 10 games left to play.

Before today’s game, Arsenal’s projected chance of the Premier League title stood at 76.6% with the Opta supercomputer. Following this crucial victory, those chances have risen to 82.3%.

For Tottenham, their relegation worries remain. Following West Ham’s point against Bournemouth on Saturday, Spurs now find themselves only four points above the drop zone. With the club now on their worst winless streak within a season since November 2007 (nine games), they need to find a winning formula soon.
