James Milner has broken the record for most Premier League appearances after starting for Brighton against Brentford on Saturday.
Milner, 40, took his tally of top-flight outings to 654 once the game at the Gtech Community Stadium began, surpassing Gareth Barry.
Former Aston Villa, Manchester City, West Brom and Everton midfielder Barry made his final Premier League appearances during the 2017-18 season and had held the record ever since, having first played in the top-flight way back on 2 May 1998.
But Milner had looked likely to usurp him for several years, especially after staying in the top-flight with Brighton upon leaving Liverpool in 2023.
An injury-disrupted 2024-25 did cast some doubt over his chances, but a one-year contract extension for 2025-26 meant Milner would at the very least get within touching distance of his former Aston Villa teammate Barry’s total.
He equalled Barry’s record on 11 February 2026, coming off the bench in the first half of Brighton’s 1-0 defeat to Villa.
That came well over 23 years on from his debut for Leeds United.
He was the second-youngest Premier League player ever at the time, having been just 16 years and 356 days old when he came on against West Ham in November 2022.
He went on to play for Newcastle, Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool before joining Brighton, winning three Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, among other successes.
Milner is the only active Premier League player to rank in the top 20 for most appearances in the competition, meaning he stands to hold the record for a considerable amount of time to come.
How many appearances will he ultimately get to, however? He could yet reach 700 if he continues to feature regularly this term and remain in the Premier League next season.
