Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, on Saturday inspected the 500 kV DC Egyptian-Saudi interconnection station in Badr City.
This station is the first of its kind in the Middle East in terms of size, manufacturing technology, operation, and application to the interconnection lines with the electricity grids.
Esmat reviewed the current status of the project, including the progress of testing, the timeline, and the commissioning schedule.
The minister also monitored the completion of testing for all equipment, components, and facilities at the station, paving the way for the project’s launch and connection to the unified electricity grid of Egypt and Saudi Arabia in the coming weeks.
This initiative aligns with the state’s vision to find sustainable solutions to maintain the stability of the unified national grid and improve the quality of electricity supply.
Bridges of power
The minister said that these electricity interconnection projects serve as bridges of electrical power, connecting countries, strengthening partnerships and cooperation, and achieving mutual benefit and economic integration.
Esmat added that the Egyptian-Saudi electricity interconnection project is part of efforts to establish an integrated electrical grid linking the two countries, resulting in efficient and flexible electricity exchange.
He added that this paves the way for the establishment of a common Arab electricity market, based on a clear, comprehensive plan to enhance the efficiency of the energy system and find sustainable solutions for stabilizing the unified grid and improving service quality.
Esmat affirmed the continuation of on-site monitoring to finalize the electricity interconnection project with Saudi Arabia and commence operations.
