Islamic State Escalates Against Syrian Government ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

The Islamic State group has resurfaced in the spotlight through an audio recording attributed to its official spokesperson, “Abu Hudhayfah al-Ansari,” in which he attacks the Syrian government.

This escalation comes at a time when Syria is facing partial instability in northeastern Syria, following the escape of thousands of detainees from al-Hol camp in al-Hasakah province, raising widespread concerns over domestic and regional security.

According to monitoring by Enab Baladi, the audio recording describes the Syrian government as “secular” and calls for confronting it, while making references to its figures and suggesting that some of them may meet a fate “no different from that of the former president,” referring to ousted Bashar al-Assad.

The spokesperson also framed the current situation in Syria as a transition from Iranian influence to Turkish and American influence, in an attempt to reshape the political narrative in a way that serves the group’s ideological discourse and preserves its symbolic presence despite its territorial losses.

The group tests the security vacuum

In mid-February 2026, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for a direct attack against government forces in Deir Ezzor province in eastern Syria, as documented by Enab Baladi.

The attack targeted a Syrian army patrol near the town of al-Raghib in the Dhiban area, killing one soldier and wounding another. A second attack later resulted in additional injuries.

These operations come after the Syrian government took control of large parts of the province following the withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces, SDF, creating a partial security vacuum that the group exploited to carry out its attacks. This reflects the group’s continued ability to exploit unstable areas to apply field pressure while reinforcing its media presence.

al-Hol escapees: intertwined security and humanitarian threat

At the same time, the escape of between 15,000 and 20,000 individuals from al-Hol camp, according to US intelligence estimates, has created a new security dilemma.

The number includes individuals suspected of ties to the Islamic State, along with their families and children who grew up inside the camp, making monitoring or reintegration efforts more complex.

The escape underscores the fragility of managing camps and detention facilities and raises challenges in assessing both direct and indirect threats. Some former fighters may attempt to rebuild sleeper cells, while the presence of civilians places an additional burden on local and international authorities.

Regionally, the escape poses the risk of small cells spreading across northeastern Syria and Iraq, highlighting the need for coordination between local and international actors to prevent a resurgence of militant activity, particularly in fragile border areas.

US strikes: sustained pressure on the group

In response to ongoing threats, US Central Command carried out more than 10 airstrikes targeting over 30 Islamic State sites between February 3 and 12, 2026.

The strikes in Syria targeted communications hubs, logistical nodes, and weapons depots in an effort to weaken the group’s capabilities and drain its hideouts. Sources described the campaign as a continuation of US military pressure following the group’s territorial collapse.  Thousands of detainees were also transferred to Iraqi detention facilities to prevent their exploitation in future operations.
