Kyler Gordon’s 2025 season never really got off the ground.
Injuries limited him to just five appearances between the regular season and playoffs. It was a frustrating development for a player expected to anchor the secondary, especially with his three-year, $40 million extension set to kick in beginning in 2026.
Kyler Gordon’s 2025 Snapshot
Instead of building on his trajectory, Gordon spent most of the year rehabbing, leaving questions about durability hanging over what was supposed to be a stabilizing season.
When he returned for the Wild Card win over Green Bay, the rust showed. Gordon was coming off a groin injury and looked a step slow, particularly against speed on the outside. It wasn’t the shutdown presence Chicago envisioned. But in flashes, including a disruptive outing against the Rams that featured a momentum-swinging sack of quarterback Matthew Stafford, you could still see the impact player he can be when fully in rhythm…

— NFL (@NFL) January 19, 2026… and the numbers back that up. Chicago’s defense was significantly more efficient with Gordon on the field, posting markedly better EPA/play splits against both the pass and run when he was active. Kyler Gordon may not rack up interceptions like some defensive backs, but his value shows up in disruption, physicality, and tackling, traits that elevate the entire unit.
By the Numbers
Note: Gordon was limited to three regular-season games (and just one start) due to injuries.

Kyler Gordon’s Contract Status
(Contract details and figures are courtesy of Over The Cap)
Kyler Gordon signed a three-year, $40 million extension last April. The deal came with $31.25 million guaranteed, which made him one of the highest-paid slot cornerbacks in the league. Gordon is set to carry a cap number of $12.91 million in 2026. Moving on from Gordon isn’t an option, with a dead cap hit of $17.5 million and a loss of $4.59 million in cap space going on the books with a pre-June 1 cut.

Yes, the Bears have needs across the defense. But a healthy Kyler Gordon eliminates one of them.
Gordon is set to enter his age-27 season. When available, Gordon has consistently been one of the defense’s tone-setters. His injury-shortened 2025 season was frustrating, but it doesn’t suddenly erase the fact that he played 14 games as a rookie in 2022, 13 in 2023, and 15 in 2024. That’s not flawless durability, but it’s not a chronic red flag either.
There is also the financial reality. Gordon signed a three-year extension last spring that included more than $31 million in guarantees. Not only did it make him one of the league’s highest-paid slot cornerbacks, it also essentially locked him into a roster spot for the 2026 season. Moving on from Gordon simply isn’t practical. Even with a post-June-1 cut, parting ways with Gordon would clear up just $410,000 in cap space — while leaving the team with a $12.5 million dead money hit. In other words, it would cost more money to not have him on the roster than to keep him.
If health becomes a recurring issue again in 2026, then the conversation can shift. For example, a cut before the 2027 season would clear up $8.3 million in cap space while taking on a $5 million dead money hit. A cut in 2028 would clear $10.8 million in cap space at the cost of a more manageable $2.5 million dead cap hit. But right now, both the tape and the contract say the same thing. Gordon’s 2025 may have been forgettable. His place on the 2026 roster isn’t.
