Something to keep tabs on today: The first hearing for a tax break bill that could help seal the deal and keep the Bears from leaving for Indiana is set for Thursday in Springfield. I’m not sure what will come out of this session because it feels like there is a long way to go before things get ironed out. However, the public declaration of progress that was made by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is encouraging. Oh, hey: WGN reports that Indiana lawmakers are set to meet on Thursday, too! Perhaps Taylor, in a role in which he does a ton of grunt work on behalf of an offensive play-caller, is something that will help him be a better coach than he was at his previous offensive coordinator stop. Sean Hammond (Tribune) has more about Press Taylor’s coaching background. He also has this quote from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson about the offensive coordinator’s role under his watch:“It’s going to be critical for me to find somebody that can organize and structure and set the table, particularly early in the week. I have been around a number of guys that have called plays in the past, and I’ve seen the potential pitfalls that could arise as you’re approaching the entire football team and you can’t get to watching as much tape early in the week as you possibly could.
“The offensive coordinator position is going to have to be somebody that not only I trust but will be extremely detail-oriented, organized and structured to set the table and also be willing to work late nights.”
The quote above is why I’m not freaking out about Taylor’s promotion to offensive coordinator. Not only is Taylor not calling plays, but he also has a defined role. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images New Baltimore Ravens Offensive Coordinator Declan Doyle has great expectations for quarterback Lamar Jackson, which includes his attendance at OTAs:“We would expect them to be here and certainly it is voluntary. But also, if you want to say that you’re going to win a championship, you want to say that you have championship standards and those are your goals and your expectations, certainly that’s going to take work. That’s going to take collaboration, that’s going to take the beginning of building the relationship with their coaches [and] other players, starting off this next regime on the right foot.”
Traditionally, Jackson has sat out the voluntary training program. Perhaps that will change with a new offensive play-caller. We saw how the tough-love approach benefited Bears quarterback Caleb Williams last year. Connor Byrne (Pro Football Rumors) runs down a quote from an anonymous general manager who tells long-time NFL reporter Jason La Canfora that the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft is “virtually unattainable.” Only 13 teams have traded out of the No. 1 overall pick since 1967, with the Bears-Panthers swap in 2023 arguably being the biggest splash of ’em all. This bit of news via JLC isn’t all that surprising, but it is noteworthy because it helps set the top of the board. I’m not sure we’ll see a ton of movement early in the NFL Draft, but perhaps rumors will kick up at the NFL Scouting Combine next week. Garrett Podell (CBS Sports) lines up some landing spots for free agent receiver Tyreek Hill. I know some Bears fans are keen on the idea of Chicago’s front office bringing Hill in to add to the collection of pass-catchers in Chicago, but I do not see the fit. Between the off-the-field issues and injury concerns, the Bears would be better off avoiding Hill altogether.
