A former Chicago man was sentenced on Wednesday to 24 years in jail for shooting another man during a children’s birthday party at a suburban indoor amusement park in 2021.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced on Wednesday that 30-year-old Meco Norris was sentenced to 24 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the November 2021 shooting he later called “one of the most egregious displays of disregard for public safety” he has ever seen in his 38 years as a prosecutor.
Around 6:56 p.m., Villa Park Police Department and neighboring law enforcement agencies responded to a call of shots fired at the Safari Land amusement park located at 701 West North Avenue in Villa Park, authorities said.
Norris and the man he shot were both at a birthday party at Safari Land when Norris pulled out a handgun and shot the man three times, once in the right chest, once in the right shoulder and once in the right arm, police said.
After the shooting, Norris fled the scene and hid the firearm in a neighborhood behind Safari Land, police said. He was taken into custody the following day at his Chicago residence.
The victim was taken to a local hospital and treated for his injuries. He has since recovered, authorities said.
“On a Saturday night in November 2021, terror erupted at a crowded family friendly amusement park when Meco Norris pulled out his gun and shot a man three times in front of dozens of children and their parents,” Berlin said. “With dozens of young children just feet away, I shudder to think of the potential loss of life Mr. Norris’ actions could have caused.”
Norris’ sentencing occurred just over two months after Judge Joseph Bugos found Norris guilty of three counts of aggravated battery with a firearm that resulted in severe bodily injury to the victim on Dec. 11.
