HENRIETTA, N.Y. — Students from the School of the Arts (SOTA) in Rochester unveiled their artwork at Spectrum’s new regional headquarters on West Henrietta Road. The artwork is part of the Northeast Region Mural Project, which sought to add color to the facility’s walls.
“The prompt was kind of showing how people are connected,” said Tri Minh Au, a 10th-grade student. “When I looked at that, first thing I thought of was, you know, like a gathering or which basically my piece was, house party.”
Spectrum encouraged students to showcase originality, creativity, and depth in their work. Shandise Smith, a 12th-grade student, said, “It represented unity, like between peoples people of different colors and backgrounds.”
Vision Smith, an 18-year-old student, said, “I wanted to try something new. So I tried the fish-eye perspective. Fish-eye view. It was very hard at first.”
Vision Smith added, “I like to create pieces that catches people eyes. So, it may look weird, but they will have a deeper meaning.”
The project provided students with professional experience and a chance to explore future career paths. “I want to become like an animator. And I want to make movies for, like, Disney or Dreamworks. Pixar,” said Shandise Smith.
Vision Smith expressed a different perspective, saying, “I want to take this as, talent to always carry with me. If I do choose to get this major for college, it’s just something I can have on the side.”
Some students, like Harley Bermudez, want to keep art as a hobby. “I want to go into elementary, like teaching. I feel like I could take a lot of what I’ve learned from the teachers here into that. Field,” said Bermudez.
Spectrum aimed for the students to depict a sense of community, similar to what they have built at SOTA. “I feel like everyone’s kind of welcoming with open arms,” said Bermudez.
Navieyana Ofray, a 12th-grade student, shared her experience at SOTA, saying, “It’s definitely been a rollercoaster. At first I was very shy and kind of in a show, but this this school really helped me come out of that shell.”
Each student received a check ranging from $250 to $2,200 for their contributions. “I use mixed media, so it was ballpoint pen. And then afterwards I scanned it, and then I went through all the editing and stuff through Photoshop and then Adobe Illustrator,” said Tri Minh Au.
Navieyana Ofray kept it simple, saying, “I just used, pen and marker. Just simple.”
A SOTA art teacher said some of the things that come from his art class look better than what he was creating in college.
More on the mural project
The project’s initiative, in partnership with the School of the Arts in Rochester, invited students to express their interpretation of connectivity through art.
Scott Stinson, Northeast Regional Vice President, highlighted the significance of the murals. “These murals will become part of the daily environment,” he said. “They remind teams that Spectrum is embedded in its communities and that our work is seen, interpreted and valued by the people we serve.”
The project not only enhances the workspace but also offers students a valuable opportunity. Lara Pritchard, Vice President of Regional Communications at Spectrum, emphasized the importance of this experience for young artists.
“For students, this is professional recognition,” Pritchard said. “Their work is selected, commissioned, credited and displayed in a corporate setting.”
The murals, once installed, will serve as a lasting reflection of local creativity and community engagement, enriching the daily experience for employees and visitors alike.
