ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Monroe County legislator has proposed a new law regarding the use of biometric identification technology by retail stores.
Rachel Barnhart introduced a bill that would require stores using biometric technology to post clear, in-store notices to customers.
Barnhart’s proposal came more than a month after Wegmans acknowledged using facial recognition technology in some of its stores to identify shoppers previously flagged for misconduct.
Barnhart expressed concern about the security of biometric data such as faces, fingerprints, or voices. “Your biometric data can’t be changed if stolen or misused — unlike credit cards or passwords,” Barnhart said.
The bill aims to increase transparency and protect customer privacy.
