UPD: Ukiah woman reports sexual assault by man posing as Uber driver ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

A Willits man was arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at a Ukiah park while posing as an Uber driver, the Ukiah Police Department reported.

According to the UPD, on Sept. 1, 2025, a 34-year-old Ukiah woman reported being sexually assaulted at Riverside Park by a man who claimed to be an Uber driver. The victim told police she had been walking home after swimming in the Russian River when a car pulled up and the driver offered her a ride.

Believing that the car was an Uber ride ordered by her husband, whom she said had also been swimming but left the river earlier, the woman said she got into the vehicle and the driver identified himself as an Uber driver named “Bruce.”

After first driving in the direction of her home, the driver reportedly passed the woman’s street and headed down East Gobbi Street to Riverside Park. Once at the park, the victim said the driver began sexually assaulting her, ripping her dress and “forcefully attempting sexual contact with the victim” despite her telling him to stop.

The victim said she was able to get out of the vehicle and run home, then contact law enforcement. Afterward, she was transported to Adventist Health Ukiah Valley, where she was “treated for minor injuries and underwent a sexual assault forensic examination.”

The woman reported not knowing the Uber driver, describing him as a white male adult with red hair and a ginger beard calling himself Bruce, and the UPD reports that “detectives looked for security video or any witness that might have information that would assist with the investigation, but were not able to develop any further investigative leads” at the time.

Then in late January, the UPD reports that “the results of the sexual forensic exam of the victim were returned from the California Department of Justice” which reportedly had matched the DNA collected from the victim to a Bruce K. Edwards, 38, of Willits, “who was confirmed to be a white male adult with red hair and a ginger beard.”

The UPD then reportedly obtained a search warrant for Edwards’ “residence, his vehicle, his electronic devices, and a comparison DNA sample.” After locating the suspect in Ukiah on Feb. 11, the UPD reports that “during a search of Edwards’ cell phone pursuant to the warrant, detectives located numerous videos that appeared to be secret recordings of an unclothed young female. Edwards admitted to secretly video recording the minor for his own sexual gratification, who was the daughter of his adult roommate. Edwards also provided information on the sexual assault from Riverside Park.”

Edwards was then arrested and booked into Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of sexual assault, sexual battery by force, sexual penetration with a foreign object, and unauthorized recording for sexual gratification. He was held under $1 million bail.

The UPD issued thanks to the “California Department of Justice and the staff members of the Adventist Health Ukiah Emergency Room for their assistance with this investigation.”
