ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert remains up for a sloppy and slippery mix of sleet, freezing rain, rain and even a little snow on Wednesday. The precipitation will move in first thing in the morning, and last through dinner-time. The dividing line will be roughly the Thruway. Areas north will tend to see primarily sleet and freezing rain, with areas south seeing mainly rain with pockets of freezing rain.
Freezing rain accumulations will range from a few hundredths of an inch of ice to up to a third of an inch of ice. With the freezing rain falling during the day, impacts on roads will be limited. A third of an inch of ice typically doesn’t cause issues on power lines and trees, but there may be a few spotty outages in pockets that see slightly higher amounts. Sleet will be more of an impact on roads, making conditions slick especially north of Rochester toward the Lake Ontario shoreline, where a coating to an inch of sleet may be possible. We may end with a little bit of snow north of Rochester, just adding to the slick roads. So, we do not expect a high impact ice storm, but rather a lower impact freezing rain event. The precipitation tapers and pulls away by late evening.
We’ll see a break with a mostly cloudy sky on Thursday, followed by another batch of mostly rain, pockets of a wintry mix briefly, then rising temperatures, switching any frozen precipitation over to plain rain. Then it’ll be back to winter and back to some chillier air and snow showers for the weekend and early next week.
