Tyson Bagent’s climb from feel-good camp story to legitimate NFL backup quarterback has been one of my favorites to follow while writing about the Chicago Bears.
But perhaps his next chapter could be with another team.
Arizona-based sports reporter John Gambadoro shares what he has heard about the Arizona Cardinals being “intrigued” by the Bears’ backup quarterback:

At a minimum, Gambadoro has a lay of the land when it comes to the Arizona sports scene. And because of that, it gives us a jumping-off point to discuss a new NFL offseason rumor.
Should the Bears trade Tyson Bagent?
Let me be clear. I am not trying to trade Tyson Bagent. The 25-year-old quarterback is a quality backup quarterback who has been a good story for this franchise. Chicago’s football team has never been known as one that does a good job of identifying and developing quarterback talent. So, to pluck Bagent as an undrafted free agent in 2023 and groom him into a solid backup quarterback should be considered an organizational win. But with that being said, I don’t have to squint to see a scenario in which other teams might want to check in with the Bears and ask if they would move the popular second-stringer.
For what it’s worth, Tyson Bagent has performed admirably when called upon as a pro. In his three seasons with the team, Bagent has completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 917 yards. A bulk of his playing time came as a rookie in 2023 when he played in five games (4 starts) and threw for 859 yards. Sure, he tossed twice as many interceptions (6) as he did touchdowns (3) in those five games, but Bagent completed 65.7 percent of his passes and was 2-2 as a starter in place of Justin Fields.

Given his talent, upside, playing experience, and time spent under Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson, I can see Tyson Bagent being a player who intrigues QB-needy teams around the league. And when it comes to the Cardinals, they might be an ideal fit. That team looks ready to move on from quarterback Kyler Murray and could target a signal caller with a cap-friendly contract. Bagent’s extension, which was signed last offseason, comes with a cap number of $4.75 million in each of the next two seasons. Coupling that number with the fact that his deal will cost just 1.5 percent of the projected cap makes it a pretty sweet deal.
Again, I am not trying to push Tyson Bagent out the door. However, if there is a team that is willing to bowl this front office over with a trade proposal that makes sense, then it should listen with intent. Should the Bears move Bagent in a trade, that would put Chicago in a position to check out potential backup quarterback options in free agency. Remember, third-string QB Case Keenum is about to hit free agency. Maybe Ben Johnson would like to draft a developmental quarterback. This Bagent-Cardinals rumor just opened up a new offseason path — one I wasn’t ready to travel down.
