BOONVILLE, N.Y. — State Police say five people, including a firefighter, have been hospitalized after a church explosion in Oneida County.

Just before 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, first responders were dispatched to Abundant Life Fellowship church on State Route 12 in the Town of Boonville for reports of a gas odor inside the church.
State Police say people inside the church reported smelling gas before the explosion. They also say Five people were brought to Wynn Hospital in Utica for treatment as a result of the explosion, including a firefighter from the Boonville Fire Department.
The firefighter and another person are both listed in critical condition, according to State Police. The other three people are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
At this time, State Police say there is no indication of criminal activity. They also say the church faced “catastrophic damage,” and it was reportedly heated by propane cylinders. The exact cause is still under investigation.
