A post to say there’s nothing to say? Well, given the time of year, it’s still worthwhile.
Because Spring Training is a time for, among other things, extension talks with players, it’s an appropriate check-in to find out whether some of the Cubs’ impending free agents are engaging, or will engage, in extension talks with the Cubs.
Alas, there’s just nothing doing there at the moment with the positional trio of potential free agents, Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, and Nico Hoerner:
Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki said the Cubs haven't yet engaged them in extension talks.Happ: “Going back to the last time, I've always said I'd be open to talking about anything." Suzuki (via interpreter): “I want to work hard and perform well, and hopefully they say yes.”

— 104.3 The Score (@thescorechicago) February 17, 2026Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, and Nico Hoerner are not the only guys with whom the Cubs may want to discuss a new deal, but, with free agency looming for them, it does make sense to check in with each. Indeed, we’ve discussed the possibility of re-upping with Hoerner long-term throughout this offseason in conjunction with various rumors, while also digging in on Happ extension possibilities, and considering Suzuki’s future.
I do think the Cubs would be wise to check in with all three sometime before the season opens, and maybe even give a serious push to inking at least one beyond 2026. The Cubs have some internal options *maybe* for 2027+ at second base, in left field, and in right field, but you’d love to not have to rely on that all within a single offseason, combined with whatever you can pull off in free agency and in trade (maybe in a compressed offseason, too, if there’s a lengthy lockout).
