There’s been much improvement on the court this season for the UNC Bears women’s basketball team.
The Bears are one win from 20 victories, which is a magic number in college basketball. With four regular-season games to play, UNC is 19-8 overall and 10-4 in the Big Sky Conference.
Junior Tatum West reached the 500-career rebounding mark earlier this year. Senior Aniah Hall earlier this month surpassed both the 1,000-career points and 600-career rebound milestones.
West (10.5 points) and Hall (10.3 points) are two of four UNC players averaging in double digits in scoring. Sophomore guard Neenah George leads the Bears with 13.1 points and Heather Baymon is second at 12 points. George, Baymon and West are among the top 25 in scoring in the Big Sky Conference. West is third in rebounding (8.6 per game).
Heading to the next game Saturday at Northern Arizona, UNC is tied for third place in the conference standings with Idaho State. UNC beat Northern Arizona in the teams’ first meeting 72-59 last month in Greeley.
UNC Bears women's basketball player Tatum West, center, looks for a chance to pass the ball while guarded by a Kansas City defender during a nonconference game Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025 at Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley. West is the team's leading rebounder and she's third in scoring as of mid-February 2026 with four regular-season games remaining. (Brice Tucker/Staff Photographer)Idaho State and UNC split their two regular-season games. UNC’s other three losses in conference came to the first and second-place teams, Idaho and Montana State. Montana State swept UNC in both games this season. UNC lost to Idaho at home in late January. The teams meet again Feb. 28 in Pocatello, Idaho.
The 20 wins would be a first for the program under head coach Kristen Mattio, who is in her fifth season. Mattio was hired in May 2021.
With each win, the Bears add to the most for Mattio in a season. UNC twice won 15 games in her previous four seasons. The Bears won 13 and 14 games in the other two years.
UNC has six 20-win seasons at the Division I level dating to 2006-07. The last Bears women’s team to win 20 games was in 2018-19.
That year, the Bears tied for second in the Big Sky regular-season standings. UNC lost to Eastern Washington in the conference tournament semifinals. UNC played in the WNIT and lost to Wyoming in the first round.
