ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Cloudy skies with temps in the low 40s Tuesday with locally dense fog at times. Most of the fog will be west of Rochester but be prepared for some areas of low visibility as you head out. Threat Tracker is now highlighting Wednesday with a Yellow Alert for a wintry mix of precipitation. A colder flow of air will develop overnight into Wednesday with a northeast wind. This will drop temps to near or a bit below freezing. Precipitation will develop during the morning and last much of the day. With surface temps around 32 degrees, freezing rain will be a concern, especially for areas near and north of the Thruway. At this time we are not anticipating major issues from the icing, but a few scattered power outages may develop from any tree issues. We are looking at a quarter to third of an inch of ice in areas that stay mainly freezing rain. Typically we do not see tree damage until about a half an inch of ice. Most roadways will stay just wet during the day but watch your step outside the house. The driveway, front steps, sidewalks, and parking lots could become icy. Also be aware bridges and overpasses can become icy as well. There is also a chance if the air cools enough, that sleet could develop. If we get ice pellets and freezing rain, that combo can make roads very slick. We need to be aware of that possibility as well. The weather could change dramatically if the temperature moves a couple degrees in either direction so stay tuned for updates into Wednesday. In fact, if temps stay a little higher, than it might just be a cold rain during much of the day.
System clears for some quiet weather on Thursday before we get another storm on Friday. That system should bring some milder air and more of a rain threat to end the week. Behind that storm colder air and snow showers will sweep in over the weekend into early next week. Stay tuned to News10 for updates on the ice threat midweek.
