ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An anti-poverty group is hosting a community discussion Monday on legislation they believe could improve conditions for Rochester’s poor. The city has the second-highest poverty rate and the highest childhood poverty rate among cities of its size.
Many of those classified as poor have a couple of jobs, but face more month than money.
Brionna Dunn, a 33-year-old resident of Rochester, lives in a three-bedroom duplex with her three children. Dunn, who holds a college degree and works two jobs, said, “It’s difficult. It’s difficult for sure. When you really have to budget down to the penny.”
Dunn pays $1,875 in rent, while the market rate for a three-bedroom is $1,895. However, the state’s temporary assistance for such a home is only $500. Dunn gets no housing assistance, making it challenging to make ends meet.
“We have people working 2, 3, 4 jobs to make ends meet. And we need to have a living wage that’s indexed with inflation,” said Jalil Muntaqim, special project coordinator for Citizen Action of New York’s Rochester chapter.
Citizen Action of New York is advocating for four primary proposals: a living wage indexed with inflation, increased housing vouchers, the establishment of a public bank in Rochester, and a change in the formula for affordable housing designation.
“They say they’re building affordable housing, but affordable housing is not affordable for people living in the inner city,” said Muntaqim.
People like Dunn for whom home ownership seems out of reach.
“I want preferably for us to have our own home where we can… where it’s our space,” said Dunn.
The Rochester chapter of Citizen Action of New York is holding a meeting Monday at Immanuel Baptist Church on Park Avenue, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. While they say their proposals have broad Democratic support, they are not without controversy.
For example, News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry examined the pros and cons of establishing a public bank.
