Chicago Cubs Owner and Chairman Tom Ricketts doesn’t visit with the media too often, primarily because he lets his baseball group do the baseball things and his business group do the business things. In theory, there isn’t a lot for him to say day-to-day on the operations of the ballclub.
That said, you do like to hear from the guy at the very top from time to time, and annually, Ricketts typically speaks a bit at the start of Spring Training after meeting with the team.
Marquee shared a video of Ricketts talking to the media today, which I’ve embedded below.
Among Tom Ricketts’ comments, paraphrased faithfully:
The message to the team doesn’t change too much each year, with Ricketts emphasizing not only what the goal is for the season, but also that the players should represent the organization well on and off the field. He wants to remind the players that they should treat the fans like gold, and that what the players do means so much to so many people. Not only is a great team, but it’s also the 10th anniversary of the World Series winner and the 150th anniversary of the start of the team. A big year ahead. The huge sell-off in 2020/21/22 is not something the Cubs planned on doing or want to do again. It takes a while to build back after that, though, and that’s been the process. There were high expectations last year, but yes, the expectations are higher this year. The Cubs pay attention to the luxury tax thresholds (implication was not wanting to go over only by a very small amount), but the amount they spend is more about what revenue is available, rather than those thresholds. The Cubs should win the division. It’s a matter of executing and staying healthy, but the opportunity is there. Winning the division matters not only for its own ends, but also for how it sets you up to succeed in the postseason. First bit of advice to fans when they hear about the CBA fight stuff: enjoy the season. (I don’t think he meant it to sound as ominous as it did, but, well.) Tom Ricketts wouldn’t offer up anything specific on what he wants to see happen in the talks, deferring to the league and the players association. Using deferred money to sign Alex Bregman wasn’t a change in philosophy, it was just a tool to get certain signings done. It just happens sometimes. You want to find a way to bridge whatever gaps you might have. (That does kinda sound like a change in philosophy, though.) Given the headwinds in broadcasting, Ricketts is actually feeling pretty good about having done their own thing with Marquee. One of the smartest things the Cubs have done, Ricketts said. They control their own destiny, and Ricketts didn’t want to speculate about eventually being folded into a more national model.Hence then, the article about tom ricketts speaks message to the team winning the division spending deferrals rsns more was published today ( ) and is available on Bleacher Nation ( Middle East ) The editorial team at PressBee has edited and verified it, and it may have been modified, fully republished, or quoted.
