The SGA and International Student Association will offer meal boxes for students observing Ramadan.
Ramadan is a Muslim holiday observed during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Feb. 17 to March 19. It is observed by fasting, prayer and reflection. During the month, Muslims can only eat from sunset to dawn.
The SGA and ISA began working with Bama Dining to support Muslim students during the month. To ensure students’ needs, vice president of the ISA, Romit Saha, conducted a survey for food preferences and dietary restrictions.
SGA President Lucy Bonhaus said she wanted to work on this initiative after she saw other schools offering extra support to Muslim students.
“I believe that every student at UA should feel they have the resources needed to feel supported in their environment,” Bonhaus said. “When I learned that some students were using their own funds to purchase food before breaking fast, despite already having meal plans, it became clear that we needed to take action.”
Since this is the first time this initiative has been offered, it is unclear at the time how many students will use the boxes, though Saha said the organizations anticipate serving a “significant amount” of people, with the goal of expanding in future years.
Students wanting to order a meal box can place an order via the Transact app starting Feb. 16. Orders must be placed 24 hours in advance and students can pick up their boxes starting Feb. 17 in Lakeside Dining Hall from 4-8 p.m.
“Supporting students of all backgrounds and faith traditions is important to us, and we want this to become a lasting part of how UA serves its community,” Bonhaus said.
