Donald Trump is in urgent need of a distraction. After his administration suffered a week of cascading reverses, defeats and own goals, the country’s headlines remain doggedly fixated on unresolved questions about the Epstein files, the US President’s own plunging approval ratings, and the first stirrings of Democrats gargling in the wings to replace him.
With his State of the Union Address just days away, Trump finds himself at a dangerous moment.
The country is cooling to his claim that America is “the hottest nation on earth right now”, and dubious that when all is said and done, the Epstein files will truly “absolve” him of misconduct, as he prematurely claimed earlier this month.
The President faces continuing calls from members of his own Make America Great Again movement to fire Attorney General Pam Bondi, following her evasive and disdainful testimony over her handling of the Epstein issue in Congress last week.
His U-turn in Minneapolis may give rise to images this week of Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol paramilitaries packing away their guns and their masks and beating a humiliating retreat from the city.

So the master of distraction needs to change the storyline, not least because Democrats are already limbering up and promising the world that change is on its way.
Governor Gavin Newsom of California urged European leaders and policymakers attending the weekend’s Munich Security Conference not to give up hope in America’s future, nor in the solidity of the battered transatlantic alliance. “If there’s nothing else I can communicate today, Donald Trump is temporary,” he assured conference attendees, promising them “he’ll be gone in three years…it’s important for folks to understand the temporary nature of this administration”.
The New York representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also told a panel at the conference that Trump was trying to bring about an “age of authoritarianism” in which “where Donald Trump can command the western hemisphere and Latin America as his personal sandbox, where Putin can sabre-rattle around Europe and try to bully our own allies there”. She outlined an alternative vision for US foreign policy that included a return to the “rules-based order”.

As that year got under way, Democrats were assuring the world that the first Trump administration would be seen by historians as a mere aberration, nothing more than a brief fever on the nation’s brow. The country would soon spring back to normality, they insisted. A month after he took power, former president Joe Biden assured the world “America is back!”, a claim that sparked real-time scepticism among several European leaders.
Newsom’s similar pledge that “Trump is temporary” relies not only on the President himself leaving power or otherwise passing from the scene, but also on Republicans reversing course in their ongoing determination to undermine the integrity of America’s elections in 2026 and 2028.
On a daily basis, Trump and his top lieutenants are vowing to do everything possible to game the outcome of this November’s midterms in the Republicans’ favour. On Friday, the President vowed to use his executive powers to require American voters to show identification documents at polling stations this year, if Congress fails to act. “There will be Voter ID for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!”, the President thundered on social media.

Some Republicans also oppose the initiative, arguing it represents a fresh effort by the federal government to undermine the rights of America’s individual states to administer elections within their own borders.
Trump appears determined to engage in dark arts to ensure that Republicans face no reversals at the hands of the electorate, and that he and his colleagues continue to implement their “America First” revolution for years to come.
That vision was certainly being presented in Munich by another prominent American attendee: Secretary of State Marco Rubio. On Saturday, he laid out the Trump administration’s ambitions to transform European politics in America’s authoritarian image, calling on the continent’s leaders to defend a “western civilisation” that – in his telling – is predominantly white and Christian. For good measure, he also told them to stop worrying about global warming, describing it as a “climate cult”.
Democrats are daring to dream that the real cult is within Trump’s White House, and is now facing the beginning of its end. But that’s a big gamble, given Teflon Don’s proven capacity to evade the laws of political gravity and ensure that every time he is written off, he turns the page and proves the prognosticators wrong.
