I am WAY more invested in the Game of Thrones Show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, than I thought I would be. I went in very skeptical, but now I think it might be the best of the three shows. Okay, that’s probably a hot take, but I am really digging it, and tonight is going to be a big episode.

— Banks (@BarstoolBanks) February 15, 2026 With all of the FanGraphs projections out, I was perusing the various positional leaderboards to see if anything stood out. And aside from FanGraphs forever underestimating the Cubs’ pitching staff because of the type of pitchers Jed Hoyer typically targets, one thing stood out to me. Let’s see if you think of the same thing:C: 3.0 WAR (16th)1B: 3.2 WAR (7th)2B: 4.0 WAR (2nd)SS: 3.9 WAR (12th)3B: 3.8 WAR (6th)LF: 2.8 WAR (6th)CF: 4.8 WAR (2nd)RF: 2.9 WAR (7th)DH: 1.1 WAR (22nd)SP: 11.3 (19th)RP: 2.9 WAR (17th)
Those are, of course, very good projections for the Cubs overall. But I think people (or, in this case, the algos) are sleeping on the Cubs catching tandem of Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya. They’re sleeping on Kelly, perhaps, because he’s coming off a career-year offensively (115 wRC+), but he’s only 31 years old and catchers often have their best offensive seasons a little later in their careers. And Kelly didn’t really luck into his, so much as he improved a TON of his underlying metrics. Compared to his career, the 2025 version of Carson Kelly had a better average exit velocity, a better barrel rate, a higher hard-hit%, more walks, fewer strikeouts, WAY less groundballs, the same rate of line drives, and less soft contact. And at Statcast, we can see he had the highest Pull Air% of his career, likely contributing to most of that extra pop. He also chased less and whiffed less than usual. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to assume he has more left to contribute at the plate. And then there’s Miguel Amaya. I think the injuries make it a little too easy to forget how much Miguel Amaya started breaking out offensively last season. He sadly managed only 103 PAs total, but they were spectacular: .281/.314/.500 (124 wRC+). They also came after a hot second-half in 2024, following some mid-season swing changes: .277/.326/.459 (119 wRC+) in 176 PAs from July on. Throw in the fact that he’s always had significant offensive upside as a prospect and is only 26 years old and I don’t know why we shouldn’t expect another big year from him. But wait, there’s more! Although both Cubs catchers are righties, they actually have complementary splits, with Carson Kelly historically hitting lefties (119 wRC+) better than righties (78 wRC+) and Amaya having the opposite experience: 55 wRC+ vs lefties and 107 wRC+ versus righties. The Cubs won’t use a strict platoon like that, but it could help both guys on the margins. Bottom line here, I’m taking a big OVER on Amaya’s ZiPS projected 97 wRC+ for 2026. And a slight over on Kelly’s 96 wRC+.Miguel Amaya belted this pitch from Daniel Palencia today during live BP ? ⬆️#SpringTraining pic.twitter.com/qcceruqsZR
— Scott Changnon (@ScottyChags) February 14, 2026 And while we’re on it (these are such optimistic Spring Training takes …), I think ZiPS is nuts to not think Moises Ballesteros won’t hit better than .262/.324/.392 (101 wRC+). I know he’s a slow, sneaky-low-power, 22-year-old rookie … but I just loved every single at-bat I saw from him last year. And, listen, it was only 20 games (66 PAs), so we’d be foolish to put weight onto this, but he did very quietly mash last season: .298/.394/.474 (143 wRC+). The league didn’t have time to adjust to him, so whatever. That’s coming. But I really believe in his bat this year. I think he’s probably one of the guys I’m most excited to watch develop. Also, do you remember when he hit his first career home run DIRECTLY to Anthony Rizzo?MOISÉS BALLESTEROS HITS HIS FIRST CAREER HR…RIGHT TO ANTHONY RIZZO! pic.twitter.com/kEWrbwlcLJ
