Matt Weston became the first British man ever to win skeleton gold at the Winter Olympics as he achieved sliding perfection in Cortina.
Weston, 28, joins Amy Williams and Lizzy Yarnold as a Team GB Olympic champion in skeleton, but bronze is the closest any man had ever achieved.
The Redhill rider’s success ended a week of British disappointment: Kirsty Muir, Mia Brookes and the Scottish curling pair of Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds had all missed out on significant medal chances and finished fourth, while a heartbreaking error for Fear & Gibson in the ice dance cost them a shot at bronze.
But Weston was always the strongest contender of any Brit to win gold as the reigning world champion and won five of the seven World Cup events this season.
“It means everything. It means a hell of a lot,” Weston said.
“I’ve worked so hard for this but everyone back at home, my fiancee, family and friends have sacrificed for me to be here. I’ve missed funerals, birthdays, everything for this moment and it feels amazing.
“Even if you’re not part of my close circle, if you play the National Lottery, you’re supporting me as well, so thank you so much. Hopefully I did everyone proud at home.”
Weston, as the leader, was the last man down the historic Cortina track on Friday night, having said he was chasing “perfection” after twice breaking the track record on Thursday.
He had done so again on run three, extending his lead over Germany’s Axel Jungk to 0.39 seconds, a gap that would have covered the top nine riders in the course of just one run.
And Weston completed the set as the clock struck 10pm in Cortina: a fourth track record, a fourth perfect run, nearly a second of room and a first gold of the Games for Team GB.
