Cherry Creek Schools’ superintendent search won’t start until summer, board president says ...Middle East

News by : (The Denver Post) -

Cherry Creek Schools leaders said Friday that the district’s search for a new superintendent won’t get underway until the summer, which is also how long it’s likely to take for external auditors to look into the K-12 system.

Board of Education President Anne Egan and Interim Superintendent Jennifer Perry revealed the timeline during a meeting of the school board, providing the latest update in the fallout of the sudden resignation of former Superintendent Christopher Smith two weeks ago.

Perry will lead Colorado’s fourth-largest district until at least June 30.

“We are not actively searching for a new superintendent at this time,” Egan said during the meeting. “…(W)e also want to step in and with due diligence look at culture at this district.”

Cherry Creek Schools will create an audit committee, comprised of school board members, district staff and others, that will oversee an external audit into the district, including hiring an outside company to conduct the investigation, Perry said.

“I suspect this is four to six months out,” she told the board. “I suspect we may not have these recommendations until summer. It just takes time to work through that.” c

The board will vote on any recommendations that stem from the audit, Perry said.

“Given the current conditions, I think it’s a great idea to start this process,” Director Mike Hamrick said.

It’s not clear what exactly the audit would look at; Perry told board members that it would be up to the committee to decide the scope.

After Smith’s resignation, Cherry Creek officials placed his wife, Brenda Smith, the district’s chief human resources officer, and Assistant Superintendent Tony Poole on administrative leave.

Directors were scheduled to discuss the investigations into Brenda Smith and Poole on Friday morning during an executive session, which was closed to the public.

Board members were also expected to receive legal advice regarding negotiations with Perry and Christopher Smith, according to the agenda.

When the board emerged from the closed session, directors approved a monthly salary of $27,716.76 for Perry during her tenure as interim superintendent. She previously earned $23,039.51 a month as deputy superintendent.

Cherry Creek leaders are investigating Brenda Smith over allegations of misconduct related to contracts and travel. District officials placed Poole on leave earlier this week to investigate alleged insubordination.

District officials also froze employee travel and passed new measures regarding spending, moves Egan said were related to “decisions and actions” of the Smiths.

Poole, who makes $232,142.43, told district officials on Jan. 20 that he planned to partially retire this year.

Poole’s wife, Rebecca López, the district’s director for neurodiverse student services, has been on personal leave since Jan. 29, two days after Christopher Smith resigned during a school board meeting.
