Can the Reds record a rare victory in the FA Cup fourth round? We look ahead to Saturday’s clash at Anfield with our Liverpool vs Brighton prediction and preview.
Liverpool vs Brighton: The Key Stats
Liverpool have won four of their last five matches against Brighton in all competitions (L1), and are the Opta supercomputer’s favourites to prevail again at 57.3%. The Reds have been eliminated from six of their last nine FA Cup fourth-round ties, including three in the last five seasons. Since the start of the 2022-23 campaign, Brighton have won more FA Cup away games than any other side in the competition (from the first round onwards, seven).Liverpool will be looking to avoid another fourth-round exit against recent FA Cup specialists Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
Despite lifting the trophy as recently as 2022, the world’s oldest football competition has not been particularly fruitful for the Reds in recent years.
In fact, Liverpool have been eliminated from six of their last nine fourth-round ties, including three in the last five seasons. That includes a 1-0 defeat by Plymouth Argyle – then bottom of the Championship – at this stage 12 months ago thanks to Ryan Hardie’s winner at Home Park.
The Reds have suffered 13 eliminations in round four of the competition during the Premier League era (since 1992-93) – two more than any other top-flight side.
Nevertheless, cup competitions have provided some welcome relief for Arne Slot’s side amid a tricky start to 2026 in the Premier League, with Wednesday’s narrow 1-0 victory over Sunderland only their second league win of the calendar year.
Liverpool put four goals past Barnsley in round three, while also scoring nine times without reply during their Champions League victories over Marseille (3-0) and Qarabağ (6-0).
The Reds have beaten Brighton in four of their last five meetings in all competitions, including a 2-0 win at Anfield earlier this season, though they have shared three victories apiece in their six previous FA Cup encounters.
The Seagulls came out on top 2-1 in the most recent tie, as they dethroned the then holders at this stage in 2023.
Like Liverpool, Brighton have struggled to get going in the Premier League in 2026, with Fabian Hürzeler’s side now without a win in six top-flight games after their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Wednesday.
The Seagulls have also failed to win any of their last six away league matches, but the FA Cup can provide them with a welcome distraction.
Brighton have won their last three fourth-round ties, beating a Premier League side in each season. Since they were promoted to the top flight in 2017, they have reached the fifth round six times, with only Manchester City (eight) and Manchester United (seven) doing so more often during that time.
The Seagulls, who beat the latter 2-1 at Old Trafford in round three this term, have also won seven of their last eight FA Cup away games (L1), more than any other side since the start of the 2022-23 season (from the first round onwards).
Also, a good omen for Brighton is the fact they have gone on to reach at least the semi-finals following two of their three previous FA Cup wins over Liverpool. That includes a run to the 1983 showpiece, when they were beaten in a replay by Man Utd.
Hürzeler will hope his midfield options are boosted by the returns from injury of Mats Wieffer and Yasin Ayari, though the tie will be too soon for long-term absentees Solly March, Adam Webster and Stefanos Tzimas.
As for Liverpool, they face something of a crisis at right-back. With Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong already in the treatment room, the Reds are now also without Dominik Szoboszlai following his red card during last weekend’s dramatic 2-1 defeat to Manchester City, while Wataru Endo looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after he was injured at Sunderland. Alexander Isak and Giovanni Leoni also remain absent for Slot’s side.

Liverpool have won four of their last five matches against Brighton in all competitions (L1), including a 2-0 victory at Anfield earlier this season in the Premier League. This will be the seventh FA Cup meeting between Liverpool and Brighton, with both sides progressing three times each.
The Reds prevailed in 1907-08, 1990-91 and 2011-12, while the Seagulls reached at least the semi-finals following their victories in 1982-83 and 2022-23, also prevailing from their 1983-84 tie.
