LYONS, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Lyons boy’s basketball team is determined to face every game with the same mindset, regardless of past wins or losses.
The team, which had 17 wins and 2 losses this season, is focused on maintaining a strong attitude on the court.
“I’m a guy that reflects on things like that. For my team to tell me to move on, move past and flush it. I really just take their word and try to move past and use it as fuel for the next and bigger and better games,” said senior Stavell LeBrecht.
Sophomore Jah’Zyree Smith emphasized the importance of learning from both victories and defeats.
“For our older players that been through that, they teach us you can’t be afraid of failure. We gotta go in and take our wins and take our losses the same way,” said Smith.
Smith also highlighted the team’s approach to each game.
“We just gotta have a dog mentality. Go out there and be ready to kill,” Smith said.
Senior center Jamire Johnson shared his thoughts on the team’s spirit.
“All about having heart. In my opinion, it don’t matter where you’re from. You could be from the smallest town in the world, if you have that heart and confidence in yourself, you’re gonna win games,” Johnson said.
Despite being a Class C team, Lyons carries a Class A attitude.
“A lot of teams in bigger and higher classes than us, they underestimate us. You come in here you can’t just think cause we’re a Class C team we can’t compete. We come to compete,” said Smith.
“They think we’re dog food. Personally, we’re thinking the other way around,” said LeBrecht.
The team is ready for any challenge, even though they won’t face Class A or B teams in the Sectionals and States.
“When we play anywhere, in the city, anywhere, I feel like we all want to win,” Johnson said.
LeBrecht expressed his aspirations for the season.
“It would feel great. It would be great. I don’t want to go how we fell out last year to Avon,” LeBrecht said.
The Lyons boy’s basketball team is looking forward to a potential trip to Blue Cross Arena for the Sectionals Championship.
