ROCHESTER, N.Y. — “We have a lot of Gold Star families here in Monroe County and a lot of people don’t know that they just walk among us,” says Amy Folwell, a Marine Corps veteran. Folwell is one of the dedicated individuals working to maintain the War on Terror Memorial at Highland Park.
On the 250th anniversary of the United States, the memorial stands as a tribute to the 34 service members from the area who lost their lives during the war on terror. Their names are etched on the monument’s pillars.
Folwell, who was deployed to Iraq in 2007, is driven by a desire to educate the next generation about the events of 9/11. “I have children now that are 17 and 10 and unfortunately, they just don’t know about 9/11 and our next generation aren’t going to know,” she says.
The memorial currently has three empty pillars. Folwell has a vision for them, “our goal right now is to create maps of Beirut (Lebanon), Iraq and Afghanistan and that adds an educational context so that when you go through the memorial on either side, not only do you see the names of the fallen but you can also understand where they served and obviously where they were killed in action.”
The initial construction of the monument was funded by the state, county, and private donations. Now, the community’s support is needed to complete it.
Folwell emphasized the importance of remembering those who sacrificed their lives, saying, “Without our fallen, where are we? And I think it’s really important to remember that they have given it all and we owe it to them and we wouldn’t be here without them.”
To support the memorial’s completion, the committee maintaining the Monroe County War on Terror Memorial is organizing a “Bowling for the Brave” fundraiser on February 22nd. For more information, click here.
